Vas Kosseris, MBA, MA

I speak English, Greek, French, German and Italian.

Who am I, really?            I am Vas, a man with 3 passports and a mix of several cultures, a “Mischling”!

I love Vienna and I live in the center of Schwechat. At the same time, I am delighted to have guests at my homes in Greece. I have no children yet. I am an American, British and Greek citizen.

I am the co-organiser of the "Vienna Book Group" at InterNations Vienna. Members of Internations are meeting on a monthly basis to discuss in English a book that we have preselected. Authors include Peter Handke, Thomas Mann, Imre Kertesz,  Nikos Kazantzakis, Amin Maalouf, Edmund de Waal… It is so gratifying to view our complex world not only from an author’s point of view, but also from that of fellow book club readers!

I am a bit of a Jack of all trades. A yacht captain (us Greeks, we learn to swim before we walk -- and to exaggerate too!), a down to earth & roll up my sleeves type of guy (us Americans, aren’t we all?), a trifle eccentric (for us Brits, our quirks can range from the sublime to the ridiculous!), an analyst (happy to analyse personalities and financial markets, in that order), an olive grove farmer

Xenia, Myriam, Eva & Rena were four powerful women which played an important role in my life as my mentors. In addition, the are worth mentioning as role models because they offered a lot with their ethos, hard work and dedication to society. Therefore I named after them my apartments in Athens. Their story is told and done justice.

My self-employed activities until now

Based in Austria, I operate my tourist accommodations in Greece. In the future I will be selling my fine olive oil in Austria.

In 2018 and 2019 I converted most of my residential properties in Greece to tourist accommodations, available through booking platforms, such as Airbnb.com and Booking.com.

From 2009 to 2017, I was involved with the setup and operation of a Family Office, managing my financial investments as well as my real estate investments in Greece.

I have extensive hands-on experience & detailed knowledge of yacht management. This includes the planning & execution of a long passage in 2009 as well as related improvement projects and ongoing maintenance of my steel motorsailer.

My previous careers in finance and IT

In 2008, I completed a 20-year long career in the analysis of securitisations/structured finance investments and, initially, in banking. Successively based out of New York, Tokyo and London, I hired, trained and managed financial analysts and analysed transactions around the world. I published, or edited, countless reports and press releases. I became well-versed in legal documents & opinions, especially for trusts and Special Purpose Vehicles. In Japan, became skilled in commercial real estate valuation.

Additional work experience in information systems gained from 1984 to 1989.

Three university degrees round up my profile: MBA, Finance, New York University - Leonard N. Stern School of Business , New York. MA, Computer Science City University of New York-Queens College, New York. BS, Mathematics University of Patras , Patras, Greece.

Through Scylla & Charybdis

As you probably know, the tale of the adventures of Odysseus (Ulysses) is attributed to the Greek poet Homer, who was born sometime between the 12th and 8th centuries BC.

When I sailed through the Tyrrhenian Sea (off the west coast of Italy) I often thought of Odysseus, who purportedly also sailed through the same waters. Then, when I was passing through the straits of Messina, successfully negotiating the strong tidal waters, I was thinking of Odysseus again. He had quite an adventure passing through the exact same straits, called Scylla and Charybdis in the Homeric poems!

My sea voyage from London to Lixouri

It may sound strange and a bit eerie, but occasionally there are echoes of the Odyssey in my own life.

So many have lived through their own Odyssey, by migrating to distant lands only to return home one day.

In my case, I pulled off my own Odyssey with my yacht in 2009, departing from the East coast of England and arriving at the Paliki peninsula, after sailing through more than 4,000 kilometres. Odysseus had a similar sea voyage through the Mediterranean sea, but it took him considerably longer!

In this video, I am approaching the S.W. corner of Kefalonia on my yacht Mondo Cosseri. Mooring at the harbour of Argostoli was the happy ending of my Odyssey.
